Well, I have
made a decision...
it's something I thought of a while ago, but never actually followed
through with. I am going to start reviewing movies and DVD
releases on here. Not on a set standard, or based
specifically on
new releases. I am just going to give a personal write-up on
movies I watch, and DVD's I purchase.
What should most likely be coming in the mail in the next
few days is
the Platinum Edition
of Walt Disney's
Sleeping Beauty. So, expect a review of the
movie and the features soon.
Tonight I will be watching the second debate... that is all
for today.
I called in sick to work today. I have had a dreadful sinus
infection for a few days now... finally got a chance to take some
medication for it.
Tonight's the Vice Presidential debate, as I am sure pretty
much all of
you know. This is bound to be rather interesting.
Well, the Dirty
DancingRifftrax was
very good indeed... I now wait for any anouncement of the next release.
In the meantime, I have been catching up on my DVD covers.
I have 19 more to make, but you can see what I have made so
far by clicking the following link:
That's
what I have been spending most of my time doing.
I am
currently trying to figure out the best way to make covers for my
Shorts collections. I have a few ideas, I just need to make
them work.
Let's see... what else to talk about? Hmmm........
I just got Supernatural
Season 2 in the mail... I will be marathoning that this weekend.
I also got a legal (see: Not Downloaded) copy of Enigma's new album.
It is very very good indeed,
"Why take chances when it comes to cupcakes?"
Soon, the next Cinematic
Titanic release will be available. Legacy of Blood.
That sounds good to me. Here's the trailer:
Now, about that band... It's called Dr. Funkenstein and his Super
Electric Funtime Sideshow,
and it contains a bunch of classic horror movie monsters playing heavy
metal versions of 80's pop hits. That's about all there
really is
to say about it at the moment.
Shane leant me (and I have subsequently purchased my own
copy of)
season one of Supernatural.
That show is awesome, and I think everyone who liked The X-Files would
most likely enjoy the show as well. Go rent it, download it,
or buy it. You won't be disappointed... I hope.
So, just a few days ago, Richard
Wright from Pink
Floyd
passed away due to cancer. I was especially sad at that news,
as
he is my favourite member of what anyone who knows me would agree is my
favourite band. He was 65 and will be missed incredibly by me
and
millions of other people.
Here is what David
Gilmour had to say about Rick's passing:
No one can replace Richard
Wright. He was my musical partner and my friend.
In the welter of
arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was
frequently forgotten.
He
was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing
were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound.
I
have never played with anyone quite like him. The blend of his and my
voices and our musical telepathy reached their first major flowering in
1971 on 'Echoes'. In my view all the greatest PF moments are the ones
where he is in full flow. After all, without 'Us and Them' and 'The
Great Gig In The Sky', both of which he wrote, what would 'The Dark
Side Of The Moon' have been? Without his quiet touch the Album 'Wish
You Were Here' would not quite have worked.
In
our middle years, for many reasons he lost his way for a while, but in
the early Nineties, with 'The Division Bell', his vitality, spark and
humour returned to him and then the audience reaction to his
appearances on my tour in 2006 was hugely uplifting and it's a mark of
his modesty that those standing ovations came as a huge surprise to
him, (though not to the rest of us).
Like Rick, I don't find
it easy to express my feelings in words, but I loved him and will miss
him enormously.
...and not to be outdone, here are Roger
Waters's regards:
I
was very sad to hear of Rick's premature death, I knew he had been ill,
but the end came suddenly and shockingly. My thoughts are with his
family, particularly [his children] Jamie and Gala and their mum
Juliet, who I knew very well in the old days, and always liked very
much and greatly admired.
As
for the man and his work, it is hard to overstate the importance of his
musical voice in the Pink Floyd of the '60s and '70s. The intriguing,
jazz influenced, modulations and voicings so familiar in 'Us and Them'
and 'Great Gig in the Sky,' which lent those compositions both their
extraordinary humanity and their majesty, are omnipresent in all the
collaborative work the four of us did in those times. Rick's ear for
harmonic progression was our bedrock.
I
am very grateful for the opportunity that Live 8 afforded me to engage
with him and David and Nick that one last time. I wish there had been
more.
...and I can't forget Nick
Mason:
Losing
Rick is like losing a family member – in a fairly dysfunctional family.
He's been in my life for 45 years, longer than my children and longer
than my wife. It brings one's own mortality closer. I'll remember Rick
with great affection. He was absolutely the non-contentious member of
the band and probably suffered for it. I wouldn't say he was
easy-going, but he certainly never pushed to any aggravation. It made
life a lot easier.
I
first met Rick at the Regent Street College of Architecture. And I
think Rick was always pretty much that same character I met in 1962.
Rock'n'roll is a Peter Pan existence; no one ever grows up. Over a
period, we gravitated towards the people who were less interested in
architecture and more in going to the pictures and making music. The
band happened a couple of years later. We all had very different ways
of working. He always knew what he wanted to do and had a unique
approach to playing. I saw an interview he did on TV, and he said it
clearly: "Technique is so secondary to ideas." Roger said the more
technique you have, the more you can copy. Despite having some
training, Rick found his own way.
To
some extent, I think, the recognition for what he did in the band was a
bit light. He was a writer as well as a keyboard player, and he sang.
The keyboard in particular creates the sound of a band. By definition,
in a rock'n'roll band people remember the guitar solo, the lead vocal
or the lyric content. But a lot of people listen to our music in a
different way. The way Rick floats the keyboard through the music is an
integral part of what people recognise as Pink Floyd. He wrote "The
Great Gig in the Sky" and the music for "Us and Them".
We
were a very close-knit band and one always has the memory of that. We
spent a lot of time together between 1967 and the mid-1970s. Rick was a
very gentle soul. My image of Rick would be him sitting at the keyboard
playing when all the fireworks were going on around him. That's the
main quality one remembers, in a band where Roger and David were more
strident about what they believed should be done.
If
there's something that feels like a legacy, it's Live 8 and the fact
that we did surmount any disagreements and managed to play together. It
was the greatest occasion.
The last things Rick did publically were the
tours with Dave, and the
performance at the memorial for the late Syd Barrett.
On a lighter note, I have been making tons of Rifftrax DVD
covers... I will soon have a site up for people to download them.
Oh, and the next one to be riffed is Dirty Dancing.
Good times.
So, the
world hasn't ended... yet. Those of you who have been paying
attention to the news know about the LHC. The Large Hadron Collider.
In non-scientific terms, a bunch of scientists from around
the world are going to smash atomic particles together at the speed of
light and try to recreate the Big
Bang.
Now, even though I personally don't think anything bad will
come from
this, I still think it is a HORRIBLE idea. Considering the
people who are doing this whole project have stated that even they aren't
absolutely certain what will happen, I don't really like this plan of
theirs.
Go
here for a video all about the LHC
and what they plan to do.
Just a few days ago, I found out that Enigma has a new
album coming out next week. They put the whole thing on the MySpace page, so I
am able to hear it in not-so-great quality until I get my CD in the
mail. If you are a fan of Enigma
at all, I suggest you go buy yourself a copy. It is swell.
The next Rifftrax
Presents is going to be one of the dumbest movies I have
seen... The Day After
Tomorrow. I am looking forward to it, as always.
I have been working, bit by bit, on my Psycho riff script.
Thanks to a few people on the Rifftrax forums, I
am highly inspired to make sure I get this done.
Wooo! Inspiration!!
I am hoping to go and see the new Coen
Brothers film, Burn
After Reading, soon. I am hoping it is closer to
their earlier films than some of the recent ones. I am
thinking this week... I will go see it. I hope.
Well, I wish my life was any more enjoyable to write about,
but it
hasn't been recently. Not that it's a bad thing, seeing as
how eventful usually means crappy.
So, just the other day Google
released a beta of their new web browser called Chrome. I
hate to say it, but I kinda like it. It's not the most stable
thing yet, being beta and all... but it's still quie nice.
You
should try it. Two words to describe Chrome: "Clutter
Free"
So, not only is the Rifftrax
Presents for Spiderman
2 coming out
tomorrow, but this Tuesday... Pirates
of the Caribbean. Yes,
that's right folks... a Rifftrax
for Pirates of the
Caribbean. This will be awesome!!! I
am excited.
Also in cool beefy nerd news, I am probably going to be
upgrading my
install of Vista to 64 bit. Possibly tonight. The
only thing I am not sure about is the fact that there are a few
applications I use that came pre-installed. Such as the DVD
player app. I mostly use VLC, but when that won't work (and
WMP hates me playing DVD's), I use CyberLink Power DVD. I
don't have an install disc for that though, so I am going to have to
ask Steve.
I made recovery discs, but I don't know if that will allow
me to
install specific programs or not... I hate Windows.
Other things, like CoolEdit Pro, I have the installer for.
Anyways, not much else has been going on. I am in
the midst
of season 7 of my Mystery Science Theater 3000-a-thon... and in my
Rifftrax-a-thon, I am on Jurassic
Park.
Check back shortly, and I will be going a bit
more in depth
on the new
band that my friends and I started...

Science Theater 3000: Incredible Melting Man
So, for the past week and a half or so, I have been getting
progressively weak and ill feeling. After last week, which
was
busy as hell, and yesterday, which started busy as hell and then got a
lot slower, I decided I would actually call in. This was a
good
idea, as I more or less couldn't really stand up very well.
I
think I am just dehydrated. As anyone who has spent any time
with
me knows, I tend to eat more salt than any normal person ever should.
Now, this isn't necessarily a bad
thing, as I do have a sodium deficiency, and my body craves and needs
salt... but that salt intake should probably be accomapnied by
something watery like water, and not something blatantly dehydrating
like soda.
So, I have begun to drink more water.
Orange juice sounds like a good idea too... it has a lot of
electrolytes or something. My favourite is Simply Orange which
you can read about here. I could just chug
that stuff out of the bottle... in fact, sometimes when I wake in the
middle of the night, I do
chug that stuff out of the bottle. Mmm........ good stuff.
Today, the Rifftrax
for Ocean's Eleven
comes out... The special guest riffer is Richard Cheese, who
I will be going to see in October. I need to pay Steve back
for that after the next paycheck.
Last night I watched The
Onion Movie.
I doubt a lot of people would enjoy that, but I sure as hell
loved it. It's a satire movie, much along the lines of Kentucky Fried Movie
and at times reminded me of The
Upright Citizen's Brigade.
If you don't like semi-raunchy, politically incorrect, or
racial
humour... you probably wouldn't enjoy it. I, for one, enjoy
ANYTHING that's just "wrong" so I loved every minute of it.
Anywho... I am dizzy again, so I am going to go lie back down.
I am at work, and I feel like I am very much still asleep. I
wish I could take a vacation day, because I just simply don't want to
be here today. My head is dizzy and it's hard for me to keep
my eyes open. Blah.
In October sometime, Steve and I will be (hopefully) going to see Richard Cheese and Lounge Against
the Machine in concert. Apparently, he has some
vocal chord illness or something, so this is his farewell
tour. I think he'd be a blast to see, so I am excited about
it. Go here
if you don't know who Richard
Cheese is.
Also, Cheese will be the guest riffer on the next Rifftrax.
The movie Mike and Richard will be riffing on is to be Ocean's Eleven.
Woo!
I got the new Cinematic
Titanic disc in the mail a few days ago. The Wasp Woman is a
dreadful movie, and it's kind of sad that I had actually seen that
movie before, un-riffed. I didn't realise it until I was
about ten minutes in, and then I groaned and said "Oh, god... THIS movie."
Stupid Roger Corman.

Headquarters
The Monkees
sound awesome
in surround sound. They've always had a massive stereo
seperation in their music anyways, so surround only seems perfect for
their music.
So, my parents both have the week off of work, and then they, along
with my sister and brother-in-law, will be going camping towards the
end of the week. This means I am very insanely much on my own
for the week. I have my sister's car (the older one, not the
newer one) for the week, and will be putting my way to work and back
every day. Yay. I have a feeling I will be having
Chinese food a lot this week. I love Din Ho.
Anyone who is in Chico, if you've never been to Din Ho, you are missing
out on some damn good food.
In Rifftrax
news, the next one up is... **drum roll** Memento!!!
That's right... the backwards/forwards movie.
Goodie, this will be fun! It comes out on Tuesday,
so I will most likely be watching it on Wednesday.
I don't know yet what will be after that one, but to keep me satisfied
until they release more Rifftrax,
the third installment of Cinematic
Titanic is available to buy on DVD on Monday. The Wasp Woman by
Roger Corman... If it's Corman, it's got to be bad.
I think I will have enchiladas tonight.
...but first, I must empty the dishwasher and clean up the kitchen a
bit. In fact, I think I will go do that right now.
I think I may have figured out why I have been avoiding my blogue
recently. It may be due partly to my having to redesign the
blog for my work's website. Currently, it looks like pure
crap, as you can see here.
So, being the web graphics guy, I
have been given the task of redesigning it to make it look and feel
pretty.
I feel pretty. Do you?
Today, the Harry Potter
and the Chamber of Secrets Rifftrax came out...
I will be downloading that tonight when I get back home from the
meeting at Shane's. We have done away with the attempted
movie review show, and have collaborated with a few others on an online
sketch comedy show. This new project is a LOT easier and
cohesive than the previous one. Since there are more people,
and simple short sketches, not everyone needs to be present at all
times, and there is a lot less involved in the way of
preparation. Well, to an extent. We don't have to
watch a movie and write a sensible review of it, and that is a bit
easier at least.
Although, with the lack of movie reviewing, I may take up some reviews
on this site here. I think that was one of my original plans
anyways.
Aside from not having loads of free time, and possibly because of it,
my life has been going swell recently. My biggest complaint
is (always) a lack of sleep. I need to sleep a lot more than
I do, but I geuss that's what weekends are for, eh?
Well then... at work, I have been on a marathon of MST3k, and at home,
I have been watching all of the Rifftrax
in order.... so
here's where I stand currently: With Mystery Science Theater
3000, I am on episode 0421, Monster A-Go-Go.
As for Rifftrax,
I just finished Firewall.
It's weird to think that I can still do all this marathon nonsense, and
yet I still have a life as well.
So, the four(4) titles were announced for the 20th Anniversary Edition
set of MST3k.
And here they are:
211- First Spaceship on Venus
706- Laserblast
904- Werewolf
1004- Future War
Some people are complaining about the selection. I, however,
think that it's a mighty fine set of episodes. The best part
is going to be the special features. Apparently, there will
be a Crow T. Robot
figurine, along with a featurette on the history of the show,
interviews with all the people involved, and most importantly, they
will include the reunion panel from Comic-Con.
I have watched a crappy 6 part video of the panel on YouTube and it was
hillarious, so I am looking forward to that.

I Took A Vacation
Okay, so I didn't...
I DID,
however, take a vacation from myself and blogueing. "I know what a break from
blogueing is, Beef, but what is this vacation from yourself nonsense?"
Well... let me tell you. I grew a mustache.
I have
since shaved it off, but for almost all of July, I was growing a
mustache. How is this a vacation from myself, you might ask?
I don't normally have a mustache, nor do I ever really want one... but my
co-worker Shane and I both grew one (each) because it was something
different than what we normally would do.
We got the idea from episode one of season eight of Seinfeld.
Watch it if you have a copy of it. It's a good
episode.
Well,
not much actually happens in my life. I work and sleep, and
occasionally I do other things, such as hanging out with a few select
people. This last weekend, my cousin Dana got married, so I
went
to her wedding. That was a nice time.
I wish I had more to talk about.
Whenever my friend Steve gets back from Germany, we are going to go see
The X-Files: I Want To
Believe. I will possibly be going to see The Dark Knight
again this weekend.
OH!!! Tonight, at about 8:30p Pacific Time, we will be
finding out what episodes are to be in the Mystery Science Theater 3000,
20th Anniversary Collection. I will most likely
tack on an edit to this post, OR I will add a blogue tomorrow or Sunday
about it.
I am excited and have been refreshing forums pretty much all day while
working.
Work
has been extremely busy for me recently, but it's the end of the month,
so it normally gets crazy for a bit. It's been somewhat nice
consistantly having things to do, but it's occasionally gotten a bit
much. I have begun to make lists of everything I get thrown
at
me, so when people come up and ask "Are
you busy?" I can simply hold up my insanely long list and
glare at them.
I am almost done RE-re-authoring my Rifftrax
DVD's... now that I have them properly mixed down (I am on the last one
currently), I will be compressing the audio properly so each and every
disc has a nice flat volume to it and will match the volume levels of
all the other Rifftrax
DVD's.
This
month of just shorts has been quite nice. To spend very very
little, and see some nicely pre-mixed and downloadable videos of the
aforementioned educational shorts from Rifftrax, go here.
Well, that about wraps it up for me tonight, at least until I find out
the episode list for the MST3k
box.
24 hours ago, I was in a theater, getting all set to watch the midnight
(12:02 to be exact) showing of The
Dark Knight.
A day later, with plenty of time for it to sink in, I am now
going to give my review. I will make it very short, simple,
to
the point, and spoiler free. There are TONS of long reviews
out
there currently, and I am hungry... so short it is:
First
off, let me say that this movie lives up to the hype. Sure,
people are saying that everywhere, but it's true. If I could
use
only one word to describe the film, I would choose "brutal."
That's not a bad thing at ALL, because Batmanshould
be brutal. This movie cuts down to raw brutality.
No
hinting, no beating around the bush, and it definitely does not leave
things simply to your imagination.
There is a LOT of talk about Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker.
I have said before, many times, mostly in my arguments over the past
18-19 years as to why Burton/Nicholson got it wrong, that The Joker, done
right, should make Hannibal
Lector seem like an all-around nice guy. Ledger
did NOT
fail to deliver, and they did NOT tone it
down for the general public.
At
first, a lot of the hype truly did stem from Ledger's unfortunate
death... but now that we are able to see his performance, the hype is
simply due to what may have been the best performance ever. I
can
honestly say that he out-acted Johnny Depp on every level, and that's
saying a LOT. I have always thought Ledger was a good actor,
but
after seeing The Dark
Knight, I truly believe he was the best actor I have ever
seen.
Back to the movie itself, and of course, Batman...
Christian Bale is a terrific actor, and still the best choice
for
a real, non-campy hero. I have always trusted Christopher
Nolan's
casting, writing, and directing choices... and Aaron Eckhart was a
magnificent choice for Harvey
Dent.
Actually... the only casting choice I have had problems with
in
this and the prior film was with Katie Holmes. She was not a
believeable D.A. Maggie Gyllenhaal, while not as "cute," was
much
more true to being a worn out lady who goes to court every single day.
So much for short.
Anyways, I am going to sum up, simply because I am hungry. My
only issue truly with this movie was that Gotham City did not
look anything like the one from Batman
Begins.
Continuity, people. Aside from that, the acting all
around
was superb, the visuals were outstanding, and of course Ledger's raw
brutality stuck with me for a day, before I could actually stop taking
deep breaths and saying "Yeah... wow."
Go see it.

Pepper Pot Soup Is The Best
So, a few days ago, they announced the artwork for the outer box of Mystery Science Theater 3000,
20th Anniversary Edition. Here is the sweet
packaging... looks to most of us like a metal tin.
This is going to be neat!!! I can't wait to find out what
episodes, special features, and hopefully other stuff will be included
in this purty looking box.
I received Batman:
Gotham Knight in the mail the other day. It's an
animated feature just over an hour long that more-or-less fills time
between Batman Begins
and The Dark Knight.
If you enjoyed Batman:
The Animated Series at all, you will most surely enjoy
this.
If you haven't heard, we're still on fire. Well,
technically,
Chico isn't on fire... but the surrounding areas are, and now Chico (as
well as the afroementioned surrounding areas) is filled with smoke.
It hurts to go outside.
Anyways,
in personal news, I decided to sell out and get myself my driver's
license on Monday. I guess that's a good thing, although I
still
am not thrilled about the whole idea. I suppose, if anything,
I
am glad I don't have to take the road test again... now that I have it,
all I have to do is renew it when necessary, and bam.
Sorry, I won't say "bam" anymore.
So,
I have kept relatively busy at work recently, which is kinda nice.
It's annoying though to constantly have things to do,
sometimes
getting a bit overloaded, and then look over and see Shane browsing the
web, looking at Warhammer
models because he has nothing better to do. Lousy Shane and
his stupid Warhammer.
Okay, so I am just jealous. But at least being busy sorta
makes the time go by faster.
Anywho...
between that and the chest pain and exhaustion from the smoke, I
haven't been blogueing much. I guess partly because I come
home
and collapse on my bed and watch a movie or sleep or something.
Sleep is wonderful.
The other night, I actually dreamt
that I was finding some place to curl up so I could go to sleep.
I dreamt I fell asleep. Now, THAT is when you
know you are tired.
I want bacon. I think tonight I shall make myself some bacon.
So, I found another thing that sounds fantastic in surround sound... Self.
Especially Gizmodgery,
the album made entirely with toys.
Today
is, of course, the fourth of July... thus making it the U.S.A.
Independence Day. My last post mentioned Canada's big day, so
I
guess I shall mention today's whole thing. First, the
obligitory Wikipedia link. Second,
here's a little clip:
"In
the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of
July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the
Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence
from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly
associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics,
baseball games, and various other public and private events celebrating
the history, government, and traditions of the United States, but is
often also viewed as simply a summer festival, apart from its patriotic
overtones."
So, yeah... that's that.
Tomorrow's Mexican holiday is Cinco de Julio... okay, so it
isn't. I am not quite sure really what I am talking about,
but I
have bluegrass Metallica,
so everything is okay.
Soon, I will be receiving in the mail (after the weekend of course) the
DVD's of Anchorman
and Wake Up Ron Burgundy.
I had previously leant those to an ex-co-worker of mine from
the
furniture store, and he was fired the next day randomly... so I have
missed those discs for a couple years. Anchorman
was the first movie I saw in the theater with my girlfriend, so it
holds a weird special place on my shelf... in the A's oddly, as I have
my comedy section alphabetized. The second movie, Wake Up Ron Burgundy,
is a whole other movie they pieced together from deleted and extended
and alternate scenes... It is just as fiunny, if not even
more
so. Here is a link to find out more
info on that, as most of you are probably scratching your heads.
Anyways, I am off to find food. Enjoy the whole weekend thing.
I finally got my copy of the second Cinematic
Titanic, wonderfully titled The Doomsday Machine.
I am almost half-way through, and already I am wondering how MST3k never got
ahold of this one until now. This is a real stinker of a
movie, but it just SCREAMS Mystery
Science Theater.
It's about a group of people who leave on a rocket to Venus,
and
when the world blows up behind them, they realise they have no choice
but to repopulate their space ship... or something.
So, yesterday was Canada Day. Read all about Canada Day here
at Wikipedia. But for those of us who don't want to click
that link, here's a little tidbit for you:
"Frequently
referred to as "Canada's birthday," particularly in the popular press,
the occasion marks the joining of the British colonies of Nova Scotia,
New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four
provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into
Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867. However, though Canada is regarded
as having become a kingdom in its own right on that date, the British
Parliament at first kept limited rights of political control over the
new country, which were shed by stages over the years until the last
vestiges were ended in 1982, when the Constitution Act patriated the
Canadian constitution. Canada Day thus differs from Independence Day
celebrations in other countries in that it does not commemorate a
clear-cut date of complete independence."
My painful tooth has been removed. Hooray!!! It was
pretty
messed up, so I am glad to have it gone finally. No more
digging
food out of the cavity with a toothpick. No more accidentally
biting down too hard on something and writhing around in pain for 25
minutes. No more pain!!!
In other things, I am soon to (finally) get The Sixth Sense and
watch the Rifftrax
for it. I have been holding out on that until the tooth was
gone, and it is, so yay.
Also, in the world of Rifftrax
Shorts, being short semi-educational films riffed on by
the Rifftrax
crew, the newest is a lovely little film called Drugs Are Like That.
I haven't laughed that hard at a short since Why Doesn't Cathy Eat
Breakfast/The Petaluma Chicken. To buy it in DRM
free video download, in a variety of formats from DIVX to AVI, for a
whopping one dollar... go here.
I also need to get my hands on a copy of the new Futurama movie, The Beast With A Billion Backs.
Judging by Shane's laughter at work yesterday, it's a good
one.
Anyways,
I was tempted to take a picture of my tooth and post it here, but it
was bad... so bad, that I don't really think making dozens of people
vomit on their keyboards would be something I want to have on my
conscience.
The other night, I randomly bought a couple
surround sound systems: One for my room, and one for the living room
with DVD player. The DVD player in the living room will have
to
remain stereo until I get more speakers, but I killed a few birds with
one stone, so to speak. I now have an awesome surround sound
setup in my bedroom, AND
I replaced the dying DVD player that was out in the living room.
So, here are a few things that sound incredible in surround sound:
Music
Pink Floyd
Porcupine Tree
Santana
The Beatles
The Beach Boys
Chicago
Carl Orff
Video
Jurassic Park
Lost
The X-Files
The Lord of The Rings Trilogy
...and many more.
Now,
away from all that fun and excitement... I am having oral surgery on
Thursday. I am getting that damned tooth removed
finally.
Golly, that will be swell.
I've never had a tooth removed, but it can't be any worse than having
it in.
I think I have an absessed tooth. That means I may have to
spend
a thousand dollars or more to get it fixed. First, I am on
anti-biotics attempting to get the infection down... which I forgot to
take before I came over to my parents' house. Crap.
Oh
well, I will take it when I get home.
Anyways,
I went to work drugged out of my mind (on medication, not illegal
drugs, mind you) on Thursday... went home an hour and a half later and
slept the rest of the day. Then I worked (sorta) the next
day,
went home, and went to bed... for over eighteen(18) hours.
Sleep does a body good, so does several gallons of water, medication
and juice.
In other news, the next Rifftrax
is The Sixth Sense.
That is bound to be good... also, the first Shout! Factory
release of MST3k
has been announced, but they have yet to announce was it IS.
Hmmm... Speculation.
I
just bought a new surround sound receiver for my bedroom AND one for
the living room... sure, I only have the speakers for the bedroom one,
so until I get more speakers, the living room will be in stereo, but
STILL.... I bought new stuff and can now properly enjoy Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree in
surround sound. Wooo!!!
More
on the tooth later. I am going, possibly on Monday, to the
local
walk-in clinic. I will maybe get some proper medications
prescribed. Anyways, that's all for now! Wish me
luck with
the tooth.
For those of you who do NOT live in Butte County, there was a fire
about 12 miles from my place. Well... IS a fire. So
far, it has burned over 23,000 acres, but it burned away from my
apartment, so that's good for me. For people who live in or
near Paradise or between here and Butte College, that's not to good...
...but either way, that has NOTHING
to do with why I haven't posted recently.
Now, on to the typical Rifftrax
and Mystery Science
Theater 3000 related ramblings...
First, it was announced that at this year's Comic-Con, there
would be a 20th anniversary panel with pretty much everybody from MST3k.
Read about it here, as it is pretty big and
important and exciting news.
Now, for Rifftrax:
the most recent is the movie Alien.
They riffed on the Director's Cut, but my local video rental
place thingy only has the Theatrical Cut... so I must obtain a copy of
the DC before I can actually watch this one... I hope it will be worth
the trouble of finding it.
But if it's like anything else they have ever done, it will be.
In
more other news stuff, my pal homie Greg (The Bastard) will be coming
back to town for a few days (from Seattle where he lives), and
hopefully Tuesday or around then, I will be able to hang out with him
for a bit. That would be some good fun.
Gee... hmmm...
anything else worth mention? My jaw hurts like hell.
I have
what is basically the equivalent of arthritis, but for the jaw.
It hurts and it sucks. The best part, as far as
feeling
goes, is when it pops, as if it just popped back into joint... but
that's also the worst part, seeing as how the more you pop your jaw,
the worse the whole thing gets.
Oh well... I will just continue to take Ibuprofen
and anxiety meds (to help me not clench my jaw as I sleep.) and see how
that goes.
Today, I have begun my journey through one of my all-time favourite
television shows, Northern
Exposure.
I'd like to state that I have noticed a lot of similarities between
this show and Newsradio.
Sure, it all comes down to the "fish-out-of-water" cliche, but these
two really are a lot alike.
First,
there's the "outsider trying to fit in amongst a group of eccentric
people", and secondly, there's his on-again-off-again relationship with
the headstrong empowered female lead. Third, there's the
older
rich man who owns everything and is full of crazy ideas, and is always
trying to form business ventures... and of course, the fact that tuning
in to either shows was always an adventure. The viewer goes
in
wondering what crazy thing is going to happen per episode.
Northern Exposure
is simply an hour-long drama/comedy whereas Newsradio was a half
hour sitcom.
I'm only on the 6th episode, and already they've gone into an Indiana
Jones style fantasy.
After an hour or two of sleep this morning, I woke up feeling blech, so
I called in sick. Woo.
I
am feeling quite a bit better now that I have slept and eaten... oh,
and changing the filter on my air conditioner may help a bit too.
I got my "Economic
Stimulus"
check today in the mail... now I have money to pay myself back for my
laptop!!! I took money out of my savings for the laptop and
the
whole computer fixing issue that followed, and now I can refund myself.
So that money is going STRAIGHT to my savings. YAY!!!
Does anyone remember I'm
With Busey? I do, and I am watching it right
now. Gary Busey is insane.
"Cameras are the weapon
of now."
This show makes me even more convinced that Busey should be our
President.
Well, it's been a long few days,
with so little sleep. I have worked on computer fixing,
watched
movies, and many other things... and now, I am at work on a Thursday,
looking forward to going home and going directly to bed.
I am tempted to leave early, seeing as how I have been rather bored for
the past few days. Thankfully, I have Newsradio to keep me
awake.
I need a book of Sudoku.
So, in Linux news, I am successfully running KDE 4.1beta1...
later this month, it seems they will be releasing beta2. I am
thoroughly looking forward to it. I have been a Gnome person for
YEARS (with a year or so in the midst where I used Fluxbox), so to be
so excited about KDE
feels kind of odd... but it has me impressed.
It is very light, very fast, and the progress and future of it looks
very promising.
There is no Lost
tonight, but that's alright, because it means I can sleep...
mmmm sleep. It calls to me from my bed.
OH!
So, I had to demolish my dam the other day. Apparently, if I
have
a dam (which trickles water through, but still pools up on one side) it
will cause everyone in the building to get West Nile Virus.
First,
I don't believe in this West Nile thing... I believe it's an outbreak
of something brought about by our Federal Government, and they came up
with the whole West Nile nonsense as a sort of cover-up.
Secondly, the dam actually brought a LOT of wildlife. We had
a
family of ducks, a snake, a field mouse, LOTS of frogs (which eat bugs
that would bring along the so-called virus), and a bunch of those
little fish that actually eat mosquitos.
I think we'd be
less likely to get West Nile with my dam in place than with the water
being insanely low and standing with no little creatures to keep us
company. Oh, that and the only people who go anywhere near
the
dam would be the smokers who have nothing better to look at.
Either
way, I destroyed my dam and made it a waterfall. It was quite
fun
to tear apart, and I was sick of building it, so I didn't mind all too
much.
Friday was my birthday, and I have to say that it may have been the
best birthday I have ever had. Nothing crappy happened, and I
was
able to spend some time with people I enjoy... sure, I had to work, but
even that wasn't all too bad.
Over
the past week, due to the whole birthday thing, I have been taken to a
lunch, two(2) dinners, breakfast, and a dessert... not in that order.
But now that is over, and it's back to normal! It's Sunday,
my jaw hurts, and I am watching The
Muppet Show. That's one of the presents I was
given for my birthday, and it was precisely what I wanted.
Also,
I bought MYSELF some new clothes and new shoes. A nice 100$
spent
on clothes, but it was well worth it, because I needed to buy some more
clothing.
Right now, I am eating a bowl of cereal at 2:00pm. That's the
joy of being an adult!!! I think.
Work has come to a halt. Even the graphics
people in the back (who always have things to do) are bored and have
nothing to do. I think I have the most to actually work on
here,
but even that isn't enough to keep me busy long.
Not that I
am complaining... this makes up for all those days where I am so
insanely busy, I don't have time to breathe. Friday, for
instance, when I worked three(3) hours of overtime.
In a while, I will be heading to Din Ho for some Chinese
food. Yum, Din Ho.
Gah! Boredom kinda gives me a headache, but at least I have music...
and a web browser or two... oh, and grape soda!
Well, I guess I am done rambling about absolutely nothing.
More Rifftrax
news... they just announced that the next movie will be The X Files: Fight The Future.
Woo!!! I have been waiting for that one for quite
some time.
In other news, I turn 28 in a couple days. I have decided
that I am not old, so much as everyone that makes me FEEL old is just
very very YOUNG.
Tonight I went out to dinner with a few friends and family members...
it was a sorta combined birthday dinner for my brother-in-law and
myself. We had Mexican food, and it was good. I
normally don't like groups of people over 2... but I had a good time.
Also, Amazon.com
FINALLY sent me the new single by The
Cure. It is quite nice, and I am VERY much
looking forward to the new album.
In even MORE other news, the Lost
season finale is on Thursday. I am psyched up and raring to
go. Bring on Lost!!!
Last night, I worked 3 hours of overtime. Whee, that was fun.
At least I had Mystery
Science Theater 3000 to watch as I worked.
So, today I rented The
Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, the theatrical version,
so I could watch the new Rifftrax.
They did The
Fellowship of The Ring, and that was incredibly
funny. I am hoping this one will be just as fun, if not
better.
Soon, we will have riffs for House
of Wax and yet another Star
Trek fan film. They are just piling these on us,
which is more than fine by me.
Also, in MST3k
news, the next Cinematic
Titanic title has been announced. Coming soon is
The Doomsday Machine.
You can watch the preview here.
I am at work, and I have 45 minutes left (as the title suggests) until
I can go home. So here I sit blogueing. I also have
been sending hate mails to my co-worker Shane.
Last night, a bunch of us (being people I know) went bowling for my
brother-in-law's birthday. I, of course, did not bowl, as i
don't bowl... but fun was had all around nonetheless. What I
did do was mock people as they bowled... or... tried to bowl.
It's amazing how many gutter balls can be caused by someone shouting
the word "penis." My pride though was when I made Conrad mess
up because I yelled out "Helen Hunt!" That one will make me
chuckle for years to come.
I was working on my blogue, when something glitched and then ALL the
sidebar disappeared, along with one of my blogue posts. That
kinda sucks. I am sure it wasn't that important of a post; I
think it was the one about Third
Rock From the Sun.
Anyways, I think I got it all fixed. It took me a half-hour
though.
So,
what I was actually going to blogue about... Anyone who knows
me,
knows that I have well over 6000 CD's and a lot of DVD's (haven't
counted). Well, I found this application called Libra that
allows me to use the webcam on my beeftop, and scan the bar code on
every CD and DVD I own.
It
then makes a neato pretty database of everything I have, and I can also
document who I loaned what to and when. That will help with a
lot
of problems. For instance, The Other Guy still has my Anchorman DVD's, and
I need to call him to get them back.
In
other news... I got a couple of those digital converter boxes for my
antenna. I now get better reception for more channels... NBC
and
ABC are still glitchy, but it's windy as hell outside, and I am sure
that has a lot to do with the imperfections.
Whelp, I am gonna go to bed now. It's a lot later than I was
planning, due to the glitchy Windows version of KompoZer.
Now, instead of me pestering you all to check out the updates on my
blogue here, you can set yourself up for automatic pestering!!!
That's right, folks... I set up an RSS feed. All
you need
to do is click the little XML logo off to the side, and you can add me
to your live bookmarks or whatnot.
If
you're techno-savvvvvvy, you can add a widget or a gadget or some news
ticker thing, and set it up to read my feed (that rhymes) and you'll
never have to miss an update to my site again!!!
Or, if you have a life, and are on MySpace... I have a little gadget
thing on my
MySpace page that links here.
Personally,
I think that's the best way to go. If you actually put a
widget
up to watch for updates on my site, I think you may need psychiatric
help.
Although, I'm the one who suggested the idea. What does that
say about me?
Right now, I am watching Lars
and The Real Girl
(as you can tell from the little info-box below.) If you've
never
seen it, I highly recommend it. I'm only half an hour into
it,
and already, it's a great movie.
Well, do whatever you'd
like with my RSS feed... it's a good way to keep up on my
blogue.
I am going to go do laundry now.
Yeah, so I have been watching movies almost nonstop since I got home
from work last night... well, I slept for twelve(12) hours, but aside
from that, nothing but movies. Currently, I am watching Aeon Flux with Rifftrax.
Yes, again with the Rifftrax.
My roomie is currently making cocount cake. Hooray for cake!!!
I wonder what I am going to do for two(2) weeks until the final hours
of Lost,
season 4. What's worse is there are like nine(9) months until
season 5 starts. GAH!!!
Oh well, it's not like I have a shortage of things to watch... I can
always watch The X Files
in French. I am beginning to come to the conclusion that I
will
never do that, as I have been talking about it for 3 years now.
Maybe... just maybe... if the boredom becomes too strong.
Last night I was up late trying to get the ripped audio of Dark Water to sync
back up with the video, so i could mix the Rifftrax down... and
today I am having trouble staying awake.
The good news is: I am watching Monty
Python's Flying Circus as I work.
So
far, I have had a Dr Pepper, a Mountain Dew, a chocolate muffin, and
some sugary candy. I am hoping all that will keep me well
enough
awake long enough to go home. Then I can lie in bed and watch
Dark Water
as I mix down the Rifftrax
for Saw.
There
isn't all too much excitement going on in my life, which I consider a
good thing. Usually excitement means bad things. My
birthday is in a few weeks, which I guess is neat. I think I
am
just going about my life, buying things, watching DVDs and occasionally
sleeping.
Anyone who is farmiliar with Disney film history know that The Song of The South
will most likely never be released on DVD in the States. For
some
reason, the Disney people feel the imagery of African American people
is controversial. For starters, the setting of this movie is
POST-slavery America... but the fact that the white people are rich and
have black servants apparently comes across as racist. I beg
to
differ by simply stating it's historical. The movie is set in
a
time in the history of this county where the differences and seperation
of race was exactly as shown in the film.
To paraphrase
Leonard Maltin (on every OTHER Disney DVD release where something can
be construed as racist or controversial), it may not be right or a good
example, especially for children and their easily influenced minds, but
to pretend it never happened is as much a travesty as it having
happened at all.
This film is a piece of history, and is
honestly a very sweet and simple movie, with good morals and an
annoying performance by Bobby Driscoll... to never have this restored,
remastered and released is a crime, especially when there are MANY
movies that are FAR worse than this being re-issued.
All
Disney needs to do is what they have done with many other
films
and cartoon shorts collections... have an unskippable introduction by
Leonard Maltin smoothing over any questionable content...
I have mentioned Mystery
Science Theater 3000, and I have mentioned Rifftrax... but what
I have yet to mention is Cinematic
Titanic.
Rifftrax has
Mike, Bill, and Kevin... Cinematic
Titanic has Joel, Josh, Trace, Frank and Mary Jo.
Mike was the second host (slash head writer) of MST3k;
Joel was the first host (slash creator). Bill was the second
voice of Crow T. Robot; Trace was the first and also played Dr.
Forrester. Kevin was the second (and most well-known) voice
of
Tom Servo; Josh was the first and played Dr. Earhardt. Mary
Jo
played Pearl Forrester, and Frank played TV's Frank.
Now you
know how that all fleshes out. But what IS Cinematic Titanic?
Well, it's the 5 of the aforementioned people making fun of
more
old, bad movies, much like MST3k.
Where Rifftrax
targets newer, mostly bad movies, Cinematic
Titanic targets older movies, as there are PLENTY of them left
to make fun of.
Mike, Bill, and Kevin already had a 4 DVD release of bad, movie riffing
under the name The Film
Crew, but that was more-or-less given up in favour of Rifftrax, which has
over 70 titles to choose from.
Soon, we will have 3 more Cinematic
Titanic releases to add to my enjoyment.
Yeah... Rifftrax
now has a new thang going on... It's called Rifftrax Presents
and it's basically the same thing... which is cool EXCEPT, the first
installment is a fan made Star
Trek: The Original Series knockoff. This thing
is about as good (bad) as the original series itself.
The worst part is the fake Welsh accent the guy playing Scotty has
acquired. For those of you who have lived in a hole for the
past century, Scotty is... well... Scottish. NOT WELSH.
That's not the only painful part of this damn thing, but it's my
favourite.
Now, I am not a Star Trek
nerd by ANY means. I am a Mystery
Science Theater nerd... but that usually means that I at
least know my basic Trek. And really, I don't know at ALL why
I am so horrified by this thing, but I am... and you should be too.
Well, Microsoft apparently backed out of their bid for Yahoo!, which
makes me quite happy. I like Yahoo!
I
have been renaming ALL of my MP3's to have one cohesive naming scheme,
and up until today, I was doing it all manually. I found a
really
good application called krename
which is flexible on how it renames files, but also allows me to rename
thousands of files all at once. Hooray!
So
THAT project is now DONE. On to more Disney audio
collections.
I have SOOOO many of those downloaded, and I need to organize
and
then normalize them all. The renaming took my attention away
from
all that for way too long.
Also, for those of you who like Trigger
Happy TV, I put all the VHS tapes I had to DVD.
I now have 4 DVD's of Trigger
Happy.
I really wish they would release official DVD's of that show in NTSC
format.
I guess you can see a picture of it here. (Only mine is deep
dark purple.)
I have the same number though, so anyone who has my number, you don't
have to change it.
So, my computer has been running very well... I switched distrobutions
of Linux from Gentoo to Ubuntu. I am running Kubuntu with
KDE4. I do miss bits of Gentoo, especially watching things
compile for hours on end, but I quite enjoy having a working system.
I don't have to figure out what I broke and how to fix it
every few weeks.
I have my external hard drive all up and running... it's only 120 gigs,
but I am using it for music to listen to at work. Someday
here, I am going to get a 300+ gig external drive to simply back up my
music, and store it somewhere safe.
Well, I got myself an external hard drive
enclosure... now I have one of my spare 120 gig drives inside of that,
and I have begun populating it with music. I take said hard
drive
with me to work now, so I can listen to music off of THAT, and not off
of burned DVD's that offer little to no flexibility of files.
And this is important, WHY? Well, for a simple answer... it
isn't.
I just enjoy rambling about the going-ons in my life, as if it makes
any difference at all to anyone but me.
In Rifftrax
news, I am almost done mixing down both the Cloverfield and the I Am Legend
riffs. I found both of those to be of top-notch
quality. I
wasn't bored a single moment through either of those. I can't
wait to find out what's next on the riff list... hopefully a
Mike
solo on an older 80's movie. We haven't had one of those for
some
time.
Today is payday... also, my rent is due.
In
a few weeks, the Lost season finale will air, and I am dreading the
almost 9 month wait until season five(5) begins. Although, I
have
PLENTY of things to keep my occupied. Hell, I never did watch
The X Files
in French...
...and speaking of The X
Files... the new movie is out July 25th, and I am super
stoked!!!
Here are some of the movies I am excited about, in no particular order:
The X Files:
I Want To Believe, The
Dark Knight, The
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Get Smart, Indiana Jones: Something About A
Skull, and I am sure there's a few others that I am a
little less excited about, but excited nonetheless.
Not Sex and the City.
Currently
listening to:
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds : B-Sides and Rarities
I have been up and about and at work for the past 8 hours... but I
think technically, I am still asleep.
All day I have been just zoning out as I do what little work I have to
do today. When I get home, I am sure I will be wide awake,
but as I
sit here, I am nodding off. I got a decent amount of sleep
last night,
but I think my body just wants more. Will I give my body what
it
wants?
Probably not.
Every day I think about how I will go to bed early... and then around
9.30 or so, I think "Well, time to start getting ready for
bed."
...and then I somehow end up finally getting to bed at 1 in the
morning. Sometimes I obviously futter away the time, but
other nights
I honestly have NO idea how 3 hours flew by.
Oh neat... I just got handed 6 ads to make for one client.
Hooray.
Well, I have only an hour left, so I guess I'd best be making them ads.
Oh, and on one final note, I think The Beatles made the first
appearance of scratching in a song. Take 5 of Ob-La-Di
Ob-La-Da had some very prominant record scratches as a part of the
song. 1968... YEARS before hip-hop.
Yes, I am sure you all already knew that.
I didn't just reveal something deep or outstanding...
I
just wanted to bring to your minds that this year is simply flying by.
2008 is already going into its 5th month out of twelve(12).
What does that have to do with ANYTHING?!?! Nothing.
I just wanted to say it.
Anywho... I am watching Chasing
Amy
for the first time in, like, seven(7) years. I think I have
only
ever watched this one twice. I remember finding it somewhat
boring and hard to really pay attention to. Currently, I
don't
find it all that boring, so I was wrong there... but on the paying
attention part... well, let's just say I am blogueing.
I
forgot how many funny lines there are in this movie, but I just don't
find it captivating visually or mentally. That's not to say
it
isn't a good movie. I think it's great. I just find
it hard
to pay attention to.
Still... it's a lot better than, say, Battlefield Earth or
The Wild Wild World of
Batwoman.
What is also quite as awesome is the movie Clue.
I would have to say that ranks up there as being one of my
all-time favourite comedies; that and It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad
Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad
World.
I never quite realised just how many people have NOT seen the movie Clue.
Sure, there is probably an even GREATER number of people that
have yet to see Mad Mad World, but to have never seen Clue is a travesty
to mankind.
Not
only does it have one of the greatest casts, and an all-star one at
that, but it is also easily one of the best written movies ever.
Some of the funniest single-lined jokes and puns are in this film "Why would he want to kill you
in public?", as well as PLENTY of standard
slapstick. "I
had to stop her screaming."
Those of you who have seen the movie are probably already
laughing, and I am guessing 90% of you said those lines out loud and
put your finger up between your eyes.
To make a long story short "Too
late...", more people need to see Clue.
Everyone who has experienced this fantastic film needs to
start
asking around for people who have NOT seen it, and then we need to show
it to them.
Just think, there are people who have died, and never saw that movie.
It's a shame. Only you can make this happen.
Lost is awesome. That's something I am 100% sure of.
I don't know how many of you saw last night's episode, but it had to be
one of the greatest hours of television history... well, technically,
the show came to about 35 minutes, but after commercials it was an hour.
That being said, here is something I have been wanting to post for a
bit...
Titanic
in 5 Seconds
Currently
listening to:
The Beatles : Sgt.
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
I have a computer again!!! After 2
motherboards and another distrobution of Linux, I have an up and
working system once again. It makes me happy and feel a LOT
less
tense.
Now, I can start rebuilding my life.
Not
really all that much else has been happening. I went on a
picnic
with Kate for our three year anniversary. That was very fun.
A picnic and a hike. Also, I have been putting
Trigger
Happy TV to video files getting ready to burn to DVD. I love
Trigger Happy.
Blah, I was up until about 4 last night, so I
am more or less braindead. Don't stay up until 4 and then get
up
at 7.30. It doesn't work all that well.
Anyways, more to come later. I need food, now that I got this
computer thing going.
Last night while I was reading Rolling Stone, I read a little snippet
article about a group that secretly and privately remastered all of the
original UK Beatles albums. This is incredibly awesome to me,
because the most recent mastering these albums have had was from way
back in 1987. That's over 20 years ago, for those of you who
can't count. Some of the American versions off Capitol
Records have been remastered in the "Capitol Years" box sets, but the
British version are still old and blech.
"But Beef," you ask, "What about those CD's I bought at the store?!"
Well, those are the UK versions... and they are all old and
unremastered. "But what's the difference between the US and
the UK versions?! Aren't they the same?" No. They
are far from the same. From day one, the albums were
different. The US market had smaller track listings, around
10 tracks, while the UK had around 14 per album.
Also, the UK versions did not have a lot of the songs released as
singles. They figured people already had those songs, and
wanted you to get more for your money... instead of buying the same
thing you had already, you got 14 new songs, not 7 new and 3 old.
So, to recap, for every 2 UK albums, there were 3 US albums.
Why?! So Capitol Records could sell more records,
of course.
Capitol also added reverb and did their own mastering of the songs, so
they didn't necessarily come out as the artist (in this case, The
Beatles) intended. So, to hear the albums as The Beatles
themselves intended you to hear them, you would have to pick up the
British versions, which are crappily available on CD at your local
WalMart or whatever.
But now... now, this group or person or whoever, calling themselves
"Purple Chick" has remastered all the albums in stereo AND mono, from
the original albums, singles, etc... including several bonus discs per
album containing a treasure trove of outtakes, alternate versions, etc.
etc.
Some of you may be thinking "So what!? Why the hell would anyone want
all that?!" The rest of you actually KNOW me... and you
remember when I spent 3 months sorting through Beach Boys session
tracks until I pretty much honestly went insane and stopped sleeping.
I have a feeling I'll be stuck on The Beatles for a while now...
and if YOU would like any of it, it is all available in
