0805: The Thing That Couldn't Die

MST3k, Experiment #0805

The grave can't hold it ...nothing human can stop it! The Thing That Couldn't Die.

A psychically gifted young woman discovers a centuries-old crate buried on her aunt's ranch. Opening it, her family discovers the living head of Gideon Drew, a 16th century devil worshiper who was beheaded by Sir Francis Drake.

And we meet The Observers. Of course, only one (played by Bill Corbett) will be carrying on past this phase, much like Bobo did from the time of the apes. Right now we just see Pearl and the SOL plunging randomly through time and space picking up characters as they do... Not really a bad way to slowly grind into the premise of the rest of the series.

This movie is filled with so many inconsistancies and holes that it makes me wonder what was cut to make this fit into the episode. The riffing is fantastic though and is filled with a lot of memorable lines, particularly the ones mocking the pronunciation of words like "measure" and "treasure" and "pleasure." It never gets old.

My favourite segment is when Paul beams onto the SOL and "observes" (as his name implies) Mike, narrating in a spoken voice-over about how much he loathes Mike and wishes him dead. I could watch that bit over and over again.

This is the first of three(3) or four(4) episodes without a typical stinger at the end. Instead, we have a brief little segment of the Observers. Kinda fun to change things up a bit, but a surefire way to piss off the fans. The stinger is one of the classic favourite parts of an episode... You don't just change that!

Favourite line: "I was gonna clean it at you."
