0902: The Phantom Planet

MST3k, Experiment #0902

It Begins Where Others End! On the Moon! The Phantom Planet.

The mysterious appearance of an unknown planet brings miniature people, giant monsters, beautiful women and undaunted heroes to the screen. The self-contained planet "Rheton" has the ability to move in and out of galaxies to escape their enemies. Earth sends an astronaut team to investigate, which discovers miniature people. One astronaut survives to help them fight off monsters and Solorite attacks.

You know, readers, every year of my life I grow more and more convinced that the wisest and best is to fix our attention on the good and the beautiful, if we’ll just take the time to look at it.

Oh boy... I always think of a certain time where I was fast-forwarding through a VHS tape I had, to see what was on it, hit play and saw one second of this episode and started cracking up thinking of all the jokes I remembered from it. It's not reeeally the funniest episode around, but it's one of my favourites. I guess this is just one of those episodes that stuck with me.

I geuss, as far as old sci-fi movie plots go, this one really wasn't all that bad. Definitely worth riffing though. I think there was a lot more they could have done with this plot, but they just decided to keep it simple and dumb.

I, of course, love Crow's Solarite costume... I make no secret of the fact that I just love when Crow goes kinda weird and insists he's something or someone he's not. Also, the glass rim segment really felt reminiscent of Joel; I don't know why.

Great episode... One of my favourites. Watch it.

Favourite line: "That was a bad and unbeautiful thing to say, sir."
