0905: The Deadly Bees

MST3k, Experiment #0905

Hives of horror! - Excited by the smell of fear, they inflict their fatal stings! The Deadly Bees.

Pop singer Vicki Robbins collapses from exhaustion while shooting the 1960's equivalent of a music video, and her physician prescribes a respite on Seagull Island with colleague and bee-keeper, Ralph Hargrove. Vicki finds the Hargroves' bitter marital strife oddly relaxing. But when a mysterious swarm of specially bred attack bees starts killing island residents, Vicki fights for her survival, setting fire to nearly half the structures on the island in her escape.

I've always liked this episode... also, for some reason, to me the English countryside villa or whatever it's supposed to be has ALWAYS come off as a set on a soundstage, at all times. Anyways, this movie is really quite dumb and mundane, but overall it's a decent plot. I absolutely love the riffing on this one... Really, the whole episode kinda sticks out as a tad different than all the others, and it's probably because there aren't many movies with this feel to it. It has a very "droll, middle of the night viewing on BBC" feel... I like it.

We get another great song, "Please Stay" which is really quite cute... but the highlight of the whole episode comes at the intro, with the "Previously on..." segment. I could watch that over and over again.

There's really not too much to say about this episode, but I think it deserves more credit than it probably gets.  Watch it!

Favourite line: "My agent is nicotine."
